Hi Tom!
Thanks for your email and kind thoughts. Yes, you are on to something, which is to say, you've broken the code.
Now that you've encouraged mr, I'll devote a piece to some of the cool things you can do with a shuffler. Stay tuned.
Best regards,

Hi Dave. Your article on "Envelopment" in the latest TVTechnology was fascinating to those of us who tinker with such things. A colleague at Zenith in the '70s (they were pushing quad stereo at the time) showed me the poor man's surround method of connecting both positives of a secondary speaker output from a stereo system to the + and - terminals of a 3rd speaker and I was hooked for life on all things surround.
In about 2002 when I first bought a AVR with bass management I was looking forward to deploying that feature; it made a lot of sense regarding power handling for bookshelf speakers and for the amps themselves.
But I was completely surprised to find it unsatisfying and flat compared to leaving bass management off. Now that I read your article, I am starting to understand possibly why; it seems that maybe this can defeat Griesinger's enhancement effect by effectively "mono-ing" lower frequencies to the LFE and a single point-source (the subwoofer), even if the bass management crossover is set for a lower frequency. Am I on to something here?

Hi Brad!
Great to hear from you! You're very welcome, of course, but I clearly remember you thanking me at the time. Believe me, I have not spent the last 36 years in a snit!
Any adventures in the meantime that you'd like to share?
Best regards, and happy holidays!

Hi Dave, Thanks for your hospitality when I came to visit in Red Hook with Brucie. Granted it was 36 years ago, but is it really ever too late to say Thanks?

Hi Dave,
I bought the Golden Ears 8 CD pack many years ago... and still use it sometimes!

Hey Dave-
I've loved reading your articles! They really get me thinking differently about how I approach mixing. The Tom Bates way of EQ'ing has been very helpful and worth the extra bit of time it takes. I was wondering if you could maybe help me out with my understanding of the article below:
http://www.moultonlabs.com/more/principles_of_multitrack_mixing_the_phantom_image/P0/
I understand the concept but can't seem to use it effectively because it basically guarantees comb filtering will occur when my mix is summed to mono. Am I missing something?
Again, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and your time!

Hey Dave... Thanks for getting me started. I was a student of yours in the late 70's at Dondisound in Red Hook.

Hi Erica!
Thanks for you kind thoughts about my explanations. Naturally, I would like to suggest that you consider using Golden Ears, Total Recording and the Playback Platinum series in your teaching. I tried to make them useful the same way.
Good luck and best regards,
Dave Moulton.

HI
just discovered your website and articles written in a language that is easy to understand. I'm teaching technical music production at school and though I have the sound engineering qualifications and experience - trying to find the language to get basic concepts across to teenagers is harder than I thought.
Thanks for publishing your stuff - I'll make sure you get the credit.

Hey, thanks for the complaint!
I'm happy to write about subwoofers. I'm not terribly keen on how we use them these days, but I'm curious – what is the nature of your specific objection to them? I'll try to focus on that.
Thanks again. Keep reading TV Technology, and I'll get this done!
Best,
Dave

...."any suggestions" you ask at the end of your article in TV technology and below we're informed that we can "complain" here...I don't see any other way than to post here – so that's what I'm doing...
I wanted you to write about "sub-woofers"...
As someone who kind of comes from the "musical field" I have a "problem" with the whole idea of 'sub-woofers" and I remember when I first saw one inside an upscale home here in LA (Brentwood actually) and I wondered, what the f*&k is that..??
I never liked them since and I wondered if there was something wrong with me, or if I perhaps wasn't the only one...
Later I did read an article that confirmed – I wasn't the only one...
To me, the "sub-woofer" notion is an atrocity...but it's not going away I'm sure...
OK, that's my suggestion – Topic: "sub-woofers" (he he)

Hi Mark!
I'm glad the ear training has worked for you. It always seemed like a natural aspect of audio to me, and over the years I've been really gratified by the number of people who have told me that it proved central to their professional development.
Thanks again!

Hi Dave,
I have followed you throughout the years after leaving Berklee. I always tell of "real crazy professor". Audio Ear Training had an indelible impact and positive effevt upon my career. I went on to Nashville where I began engineering publishing demos, but then got heavily into design, testing and producing concert loudspeaker systems for a number of production companies in the area. Family has brought me back to NH where I do architectural design and operate a modest recording studio. Although I'm mostly building houses, they sound good. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
I enjoyed reading the postings from former students, et al, especially those referencing those 'halcyon' days at Dondisound. Here's another. We first met in late fall '72. story I was with my musician/friend Juergen Wende when he recorded a promo tape of mostly originals. In spring '73, you and Sean recorded some radio-bound commercials with my v/o. We also worked on a promo tape for a synth. company you worked with at the time. Your kids were very young and, rarely, visited the control room for early sound education!
I found your site through a link ( IZotope) provided by a young friend when I requested some on-line tools to improve fidelity on some mp3 downloads. Congrads on a career well served in personal sound exploration and in inspiring so many others in class settings and instructionals. I'll pass along your web info to him- he does audio production and composing for public tv and films.
Ironic that all these years later, we end up 30 minutes from one another, albeit in different realms( I'm a chiropractor in practice in Millbury). Hope this 'blast from the past' finds you well and continuing to thrive. Al Hughes

Hi Dave,
I don't know if you remember me. I came to an ear training exercise at Parsons with my mom about a year or two ago. Since then I have become really fascinated with your work with Bang & Olufson and the acoustic lens. I have made it my life's goal to save up enough money to buy a pair of BeoLab 5 speakers. I was fortunate enough to be able to hear a concert at Berklee for their Music Technology Summer Workshop where they used BeoLab 5 speakers, it was the best listening experience ever.
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you both at Parsons and at the Protools Users Group. I would love to talk to you again sometime.
Sincerely,

Hi Dave,
It's hard to believe; I graduated 20 years ago last month from the Sound Recording Technology program. I'm putting together a small sound syllabus this morning for Montana State University's graduate film program. Your voice has been in my head all morning and I'm having to research online to see if I remember any of it correctly.
I've been working in the production sound mixing business for 13 years and have a couple of primetime Emmys under my belt. The travel schedule has been fantastically brutal and the life experiences incredible. I rarely play my trombone any more, but can still hear the terrible room modes of the high-ceiling practice rooms at Fredonia. Thanks again for a great education.
Cheers,
Brian

Hi Dave,
I've enjoyed reading your articles over the years and came here tonight to see if you have any articles or thoughts about relating sound listening experiences to visual feedback. I find myself repeatedly confronted by people who refuse to see merit in visual information while mixing sound.
You have probably heard similar statements; "I just twist the knob and use my ears", or "If you look at the settings on a EQ plug in you can not really be listening" and stuff like that.
I enjoy listening intently while using all the tools, available these days, that provide visual confirmation of what you think you hear.
For example; I might listen while sweeping across a para-graphic EQ while noting the actual frequencies that seems pertinent by looking at the text display in a EQ plug in GUI.
A lot of folks seem to think it is impure to use that sort of knowledge, and I frequently find myself trying to explain the benefits of knowing what you are hearing to someone who seems sure they have "golden ears" and great instincts while stating that they have no interest in being distracted by factual knowledge.
Personally, I've been humbled by many a ABX test... so I'm willing to work hard every day by listening while augmenting my impressions with feedback from my tools.
Have you ever published, or might you consider publishing, an article about your thoughts on this subject.
I have always thought that you advocate for informed decision making using a combination of listening and knowledge earned by fact based analysis. I hope you might have a well reasoned presentation that speaks to this subject.
Thanks for all the great info you share.
best regards,

Hello Dave,
I took your course at Gettysburg College in 1975. You were inspirational & exceptional. Apparently you have been VERY BUSY over the last 35 years. WoW! What an amazing resume. The last time we saw each other was at DondiSound probably 1978-1979.....
I have been a manufacturer's rep in the stereo business since 1978 ( after 3 years in stereo retailing ).
My daughter graduated from BC in 2005 and now works at BU. She'll have her Masters from there in May.
May I give you a call next time I am in Boston?
Thanks for making such a profoundly positive impact on my life.
